Work Package 3

Rural livelihood resilience and food security

WP3 merges the topics of food security, resilience, and disaster risk management.

Mozambique is one of the countries in Africa which is most affected by CC and extreme weather events. Small-scale family farm households precarious economic situation is worsened by disaster risks (droughts, cyclones, floods). In 2019 – as a consequence of the cyclones Idaii and Kenneth – the north and center of Mozambique lost 270,000 ha of cultivated area.

The strengthening of the rural population's resilience has become a national priority issue. Mozambique has made considerable progress towards strengthening emergency preparedness and response capacities at the local and regional level by operational entities and a system of "Local Disaster Risk Management Committees (CLGRC)".
